Starlit skies and cloudy nights alike bear the witness of your infinite transcendence and perfect peace, O Majesty Divine. God above all, and strangely near, be near to me through every hour of darkness. Shelter my loved ones beneath your mighty hand. Rest my mind and soul in you, from every anxious thought, from every worry, doubt, or fear. Come close, and keep me close to you, blessed Triune Majesty—Amen.
Holy One, into our world of darkness and confusion, you have come—the Word of God. You have all wisdom and understanding; you are light and life. Be my light in the hours of night, and guide my thoughts in paths of goodness and peace. Holy Spirit, let me rest in union with the Son who came to be my peace. Great Father, reign over my thoughts and desires. Direct me in your way—Amen.
Lord, thank you for the lessons of the day; may I learn them all the better tomorrow. All knowledge and strength comes from you. Strengthen my faith by your teaching and your providential love; strengthen me in the weary hours and make my rest a refreshment to body and soul. Take from me this day, with all its joys and sorrows, triumphs and terrors and whatever else, and let me think now on your boundless love and all-sufficiency, your love come down for me—Amen.
The day is yours, God, and also the night. Keep my heart fixed on you, and my mind at peace in you. Do not let me give in to temptation through tiredness, but let me rest my weary self in your unfailing strength. You shelter the weary, and restore those who come to you in their weakness. Teach me, when the day is done, to meditate upon your goodness and love—to let go, and delight in you.
Thank you, God, for bringing me safely through this day. I lay it now at your feet. Bless the work I have done, and let it be for your glory. Forgive my sins and cover my failures, and let me know tonight the peaceful sleep of grace and the hope of your mercies and strength on the morrow. When I go to rest, turn my thoughts to the all-sufficiency of Jesus Christ my Savior. Guard me through the hours of the night, until the new day dawns. Amen.
“O Lord, who art as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land, who beholdest Thy weak creatures, weary of labor, weary of pleasure, weary of hope deferred, weary of self, in Thine abundant compassion and unutterable tenderness, bring us, we pray Thee, unto Thy rest–Amen.”
-Christian Rosetti, quoted in Great Souls at Prayer, 240
