“The LORD reigns; let the peoples tremble! He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake!” (Psalm 99:1, ESV).
Psalm 99 thunders forth a mighty declaration of the sovereignty of God. Verse 1 presents this theme in two parallel statements of declaration-exhortation, each emphasizing the awesome majesty of God’s reign. His enthronement “upon the cherubim” alludes to the atonement cover of the ark of the covenant, and thus both to God’s dread majesty in the holiest place and to His covenant Lordship over (and for) His people.
Live reverently before your God. The Lord is the great King, and His rule will one day be unquestioned, His majesty universally acknowledged. Then He will put all things right, and His children will know the joy that comes from loyally loving the King.
